NFL Football as Cultural Export

The National Football League’s (NFL) Global Markets Program (GMP) is expanding its reach into more international markets and hosting games in Dublin, London, Berlin, Madrid and São Paulo this season and this is only the beginning. The GMP will see more growth in the years to come.

The upcoming NFL Season Schedule includes 7 – 8 regular season games played in the U.K., the E.U. and Brazil.  All games will be played in ATA Carnet countries except Brazil which is a former carnet country.

ATA Carnets will be used to temporarily move equipment across international borders for the NFL teams. Other international competitions such as the Olympics, Formula 1, Tour de France, NHL games, NBA games, MLB games, US Sailing, and many, many more use ATA Carnets to clear equipment through foreign customs and avoid paying import duty and tax on them.
 
Each NFL team playing in a foreign country will move between 15,000 and 35,000 lbs. of equipment across international borders for the game. The equipment can be as much as $1,000,000 in value and when using an ATA Carnet as the method of temporary import the savings will be between 25 – 35% of the value into the U.K. and E.U. Teams are saving approximately $250,000 – $350,000 on $1M in value per customs border entry.  Add to the savings the convenience ATA Carnets provide when they are presented to customs upon entry and the decision is clear.
 
Three - five months prior to kick-off the NFL team will ship cargo to include:

  • Generators
  • Batteries
     

Nine days prior to kick-off the team will travel with accompanying baggage to include:  

  • Practice equipment
  • Computers & IT equipment
  • A/V equipment
  • Helmets, pads, jerseys, cleats
  • Mascots
