FALSE:  Yes, you can.  Temporary exporters occasionally have an opportunity to sell an item off their carnet and they are not certain if that is allowed.  Do not fear, selling an item off your ATA Carnet is one of the many flexibilities of this unique trade tool.  If you find yourself in this situation there are steps to follow, before you leave the foreign country, to comply with what is required by customs. Call the Carnet HelpLine® 1-800-282-2900 or email a Carnet Specialist for instructions before departing.

You are responsible for payment of the import-duty and -tax on the goods or merchandise sold (or left behind).  The goods, merchandise or equipment returning with you, avoid payment of the duty and taxes.  The ATA Carnet’s many benefits create opportunities for expansion and growth.  ATA Carnets can be used in 87+ countries and territories currently active in the ATA Carnet system.  The ATA Carnet is an internationally accepted customs document for temporarily exported merchandise, goods, or professional equipment and allows cross border movement of goods import-duty and -tax free into any of the 87+ carnet countries and territories for up to a year.
