Boomerang Carnets – Your Carnet Specialists

Whatever part of the world you live in, whether you celebrated New Year’s Eve awestruck by fireworks, eating black-eyed peas or rollmop for luck, drinking champagne, or plunging into icy water for a Polar Bear plunge, boomerang carnets wishes you a healthy, prosperous 2024!

Last year, symphony orchestras and rock bands needing ATA Carnets returned in force to international touring.  In-person international events, including conventions, trade fairs, and conferences who needed ATA Carnets were back, with major theatrical touring productions in the U.S. and U.K. in the mix as well.  We saw a bumper crop of carnets for horses, marching bands, and carnet de passages en douane.  We launched Boomerang Freight® Solutions last year, a new consultation and management service offering the best solutions for boomerang freight® utilizing our strategic partners’ network.  We saw two key team members in the U.S. and U.K. each celebrate 30-year work anniversaries.  This past year also saw the news of a completed digital Carnet journey from the U.K. to the EU and back, an exciting development in the evolution of the eATA Carnet and something that will modernize the ATA Carnet over time.

What We Know:

  • The eATA Carnet is in the pilot testing phase with eight countries currently processing the digital carnet at some, not all, airports within their borders. The testing is of hand-carried goods, equipment, and merchandise. Cargo is in development.

  • During a period of transition, there will be a temporary union of the paper carnet document and the digital version. Both will be carried simultaneously by the carnet user or their representative.

  • The digital carnet will be accessed and carried via an App on your phone.

  • Both must be processed by customs at all customs points.  The paper document will be processed and stamped by customs first and then the digital version.

  • You should not leave the customs office before ensuring the carnet’s QR code has been “greyed out.”

Though the digital eATA Carnet will come with a learning curve and period of adjustment, it will streamline clearing customs even faster than the current paper document does today.  Clearing customs expediently with your goods at borders with an ATA Carnet is one of its greatest benefits.   Curt E.H. Wilson, President and CEO, boomerang carnets commented, “The eATA Carnet will make the ATA Carnet process even more beneficial than it already is for temporary imports."

The ATA Carnet is an internationally accepted customs document for temporarily exported merchandise, goods, or equipment (boomerang freight®) that allows for cross-border movement of those goods import-duty and -tax free in and out of 87+ carnet countries and territories for up to a year.  Also known as the Merchandise Passport, the ATA Carnet is a unique international trade tool for accessing foreign markets easily and affordably.
