The ATA Carnet: The “Merchandise Passport”

The ATA Carnet is an internationally accepted customs document for temporarily exported merchandise or goods.  It allows cross border movement of those goods import-duty and -tax free into 87+ carnet countries and territories for up to a year.  Known as the “Merchandise Passport” for boomerang freight®, the ATA Carnet is a vital tool for businesses engaged in international trade.
 

The CPD: The “Vehicle Passport”

The CPD, known formally as Carnet de Passages en Douane, is an internationally accepted customs document that differs from the ATA Carnet in that it is used for the temporary admission of road vehicles (private and commercial road motor vehicles) in countries where required.  The CPD, known as the “Vehicle Passport”, allows vehicles to enter multiple countries for temporary importation without paying the import-duty and -taxes and is valid for up to a year.  They can also provide an extra layer of protection clearing customs in countries where they are not required.  Acceptable vehicles covered by CPDs include new and used passenger cars, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, and trailers.  Boomerang carnets issues CPDs for both the U.S. and Canada. 
 

A Dream Come True for One Customer

Boomerang carnets received a call for help in the summer of 2023 from a highly successful e-commerce fulfillment business entrepreneur.  After selling his business, he decided to travel the globe in a luxury motorhome valued at approximately $1M.  The vehicle was built and bought in Germany. In 2023, we asked, “Where’s your carnet? How do you plan to get this into the U.S.?” As yet, he didn’t have a plan.

Fast forward to today, the globetrotting entrepreneur has been enjoying the beauty of North America, and called again explaining he and the luxe motorhome are in Anchorage, Alaska, with the desire to ship it to Chile and fly to meet it there.
