Know Before You Go

Planning a global road trip?  Driving in a foreign country can be an exciting adventure but it's important to be properly prepared.  If you are planning to take your vehicle abroad, two documents are especially important: the International Driving Permit (IDP), and the Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD)—crucial documents for driving abroad and crossing international borders with ease.  The key distinction between them: one is for you (IDP) and one is for your vehicle (CPD).

What is an IDP?

The International Driving Permit (IDP), sometimes referred to as an international driver’s license, allows you to drive legally in countries that recognize and require it.  It is a document that translates your identifying driver’s information into multiple languages.  If the country you are visiting requires an IDP, it should be carried alongside your valid driver’s license.  Most countries highly recommend an IDP even if it is not required.

Obtaining an IDP

In the United States, the U.S. Department of State authorizes the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA) to issue IDPs.  You can apply in person at a full-service AAA branch, by mail, or online through the AATA website. In Canada, you can apply for your IDP through the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA).

What is a CPD?

The Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD), is an international customs document which covers the temporary admission of motor vehicles (private and commercial road motor vehicles) in 70 Carnet Countries where required.

The CPD, also known as the “Vehicle Passport,” allows a vehicle to temporarily enter one or more countries (considered temporary importation) without paying the import duty and tax. A CPD is valid for up to a year from date of issue.  If your travel extends beyond a year, it can be renewed up to 4 times for a total of 5 years validity, if renewed annually.  CPDs add an extra layer of protection clearing customs in countries where they are not required.

Typical vehicles temporarily exported for personal use that are eligible for a CPD are:

  • new & used passenger cars
  • new & used motorcycles
  • recreational vehicles (RVs)
  • caravans
  • trailers
