Peru to Officially Commence ATA Carnet Operations

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has announced Peru’s acceptance as a member of the ATA Carnet International Guaranteeing chain during a meeting of the ICC World Chambers Federation (ECF) General Council on November 21, 2023.  The Lima Chamber of Commerce is the national guaranteeing and issuing association appointed by Peru Customs (National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration, SUNAT).  ATA Carnet operations in Peru will officially begin on April 30, 2024.  Peru is the third country in Latin America, after Chile and Mexico, to accept the use of ATA Carnets for temporary admission of goods.  This is welcome news for exporters looking to expand their business and services into the Peru trade market that commands sums in the billions yearly. 

The ATA Carnet is an internationally accepted customs document for temporarily exported merchandise or goods.  It allows cross border movement of those goods import-duty and -tax free into  into 87+ carnet countries and territories for up to a year.  The ATA Carnet is known as the Merchandise Passport for boomerang freight® and ideal for Commercial Samples, Professional Equipment, and Goods for Display at Trade Fairs and Exhibitions.  At the end of the year, all the items listed on the carnet return to the country of origin, thus the term boomerang freight.  

The scope of acceptance for Peru includes professional equipment and goods to be displayed or used at exhibitions, fairs, meetings, and similar events. 

Professional Equipment that can be covered on an ATA Carnet, for example, includes musical instruments, film equipment, repair/testing tools, research equipment, medical devices, surveying equipment, UAVs, and more.  Peru entering the ATA Carnet system will open doors for media teams, musicians, filmmakers, medical professionals, academics/scientists conducting research and many more.
