“The eATA Carnet will make the ATA Carnet process even more beneficial than it already is for temporary imports."

—Curt E.H. Wilson, President & CEO, boomerang carnets

The digital transformation of the ATA Carnet has arrived, and boomerang carnets is committed to keeping you informed throughout every stage as this transition unfolds.  You can depend on us to be there with you every step of the way.

The ATA Carnet is transforming from a paper document to a digital one—an eATA Carnet.  The magnitude of this undertaking requires more than 90 countries and territories, their national guaranteeing associations, customs authorities, and the wide range of carnet users and exporters to all be ready at the same time.  Needless to say, it is a process.

During the next phase in this transition, you may be required to carry your ATA Carnet in both the paper and digital form, a “temporary union”, of both digital and paper versions of your carnet.  All the benefits of the ATA Carnet will remain the same, only the form is changing from a paper document to a digitized one and the delivery of it.

To understand the digital eATA Carnet more fully, this blog series highlights four newly enhanced benefits of the digital eATA Carnet:

  • Security & Compliance
  • Speed & Efficiency
  • Flexibility & Control
  • Improved User Experience

In this third installment, we focus on the newly enhanced benefits the digital ATA Carnet provides regarding Flexibility & Control.

How You Will Benefit From the Digital Carnet

Flexibility & Control

  • Option to share either the full Carnet or only specific transactions, providing greater control over Carnet usage and access

  • Easy digital access from mobile devices or printed QR codes for convenient presentation to Customs

As the ATA Carnet system is digitized, all core benefits that businesses, individuals, and organizations rely on today, remain firmly in place.  ATA Carnet users will still be able to temporarily import goods into multiple countries while avoiding duties and taxes.  The eATA Carnet will build on these advantages by delivering new digital features that streamline the process and enhance the user experience.  For customers utilizing our ATA Carnet services in both the U.S. and the U.K., the Boomerang Benefit advantage will apply to boomerang digital carnets.

The ATA Carnet

The ATA Carnet is an internationally accepted customs document for temporarily exported merchandise, goods, or equipment (boomerang freight®) that allows cross-border movement of those goods import-duty and -tax free in and out of 90 carnet countries and territories for up to a year.  Also known as the Merchandise Passport, the ATA Carnet is a unique international trade tool for accessing foreign markets easily and affordably.

ATA Carnets are widely used across numerous industries, including:

  • Film and television production
  • News and media companies
  • Concert and music touring
  • Construction
  • Automotive and Motorsports
  • Robotics
  • Auction house
  • Medical device
  • Apparel
  • Security and defense
  • Sports
  • And more

Though the digital eATA Carnet will come with a learning curve, it will streamline clearing customs even faster than the current paper document does today.  Clearing customs expediently and confidently with your goods at borders with an ATA Carnet is one of its greatest benefits.
