Boomerang carnets® recently presented a webinar, "ATA Carnets – How to Grow, Save Money and Simplify Customs Clearance on Temporary Exports and Imports.”  It was arranged and hosted by Bradley University and the East Peoria Chamber of Commerce in Illinois for anyone involved in international trade logistics, international sales/marketing, trade shows, exhibitions, trade missions, and businesses looking to expand internationally.     

It’s time to get to know ATA Carnets.  At boomerang carnets, we think everyone should know about ATA Carnets.  They are a flexible, international trade tool that provide significant savings and ease clearing Customs. Enterprises seeking growth and expansion internationally should know about the significant advantages of ATA Carnet use.  ATA Carnets are utilized by a wide variety of industries, businesses, companies, individuals, and organizations in many sectors. 
 

The ATA Carnet is an internationally accepted Customs document for temporarily exported merchandise, goods, or equipment (boomerang freight®) that allow for cross-border movement of those goods import-duty and -tax free in and out of 87+ carnet countries and territories for up to a year.  Also known as the “Merchandise Passport,” the ATA Carnet is a unique international trade tool for accessing foreign markets easily and affordably.  The acronym “ATA” stands for the combined French and English words “Admission Temporaire-Temporary Admission.” 

ATA Carnets are used to facilitate the movement of merchandise across international borders for display and “demo” purposes to land sales or service contracts. They will clear displays, booths, samples, and signage through customs when exhibiting at international trade shows and events.  Trade shows are ideal to connect with prospects interested in your goods or services. They are also used for contracted jobs, for example, in the construction industry where machinery needed for a job is transported by cargo, then returned to the country of origin when the job is done.
 

Where to Use ATA Carnets   

The ATA Carnet can be used in 87+ carnet countries and territories currently in the ATA Carnet system.  From the European Union to Mexico, Canada, India, Vietnam, Chile, and Australia, for example. 
 

Carnet Use in Non-Carnet Countries.

ATA Carnets are also used by some customers traveling in and out of non-carnet countries to make clearing Customs less cumbersome and time consuming.  Their gravitas as an internationally accepted Customs document is widely known, even to those countries not yet in the carnet system.  ATA Carnet documentation is clear and can assist avoiding red tape delays at Customs.  Documentary filmmakers often use them when going into non-carnet countries for that very reason—so that they can avoid any delay at Customs and remain on schedule.
