International Customs Day on January 26 is the perfect time to highlight ATA Carnets as an international trade tool for smooth customs clearance of goods while avoiding payment of duty and taxes on temporary imports. Avoid Duties, Taxes, and Costly Deposits
When importing goods, merchandise, or professional equipment temporarily, customs procedures can quickly become complex—and expensive. Importers are often required to pay duties and taxes upfront or post large on-the-spot overseas cash deposits to move their goods and equipment across borders. ATA Carnets eliminate any confusing requirements, offering a streamlined, internationally accepted solution for your temporary imports.
Consider this example: If you are temporarily importing $100,000 worth of goods, customs authorities may require a cash deposit of up to $40,000 without an ATA Carnet. Multiply that by multiple trips in a 12-month period or trips to multiple countries and the financial impact escalates quickly, restricting cash flow, limiting mobility, and putting international opportunities on hold.
With an ATA Carnet, cash deposits are eliminated. Valid for up to one year, an ATA Carnet can cover multiple trips to multiple countries for itineraries on the move. ATA Carnets also serve as the registration of goods with Customs upon re-entry to the U.S. or U.K. saving you additional paperwork and cost.
